What are pronouns?
Pronouns are what we use to refer to people and things when not using their names.
You've probably heard of:
⦿ She/Her
⦿ He/Him
⦿ They/Them
But these are also pronouns we use in everyday speech!
⦿ We/Us
⦿ I/Me
⦿ You/Your
⦿ It/Its
And more pronouns are being created by folks every day! These uncommon pronouns are often referred to as "neopronouns."
⦿ Ey/Em
⦿ Xe/Xem
⦿ Fae/Faer
⦿ and more!
Why are pronouns important?
Pronouns are important because it can be exhausting to constantly refer to someone as their name, when there are easier shorthands.
Pronounless Example Story:
Alice met with Brian and Claire went to the park. Alice brought Alice's dog with Alice. Brian arrived in Brian's car. Claire used Claire's phone to take a picture of Claire's friends.
Kinda clunky, right?
Let's try with pronouns.
Alice - She/Her
Brian - He/Him
Claire - Fae/Faer
Alice met with Brian and Claire to the park. She brought her dog with her. Brian arrived in his car. Claire used faers phone to take a picture of faers friends.
That sounds a lot cleaner!
What are she/they pronouns?
She/They pronouns means that someone's pronouns are both she/her and they/them.
How do I use she/they pronouns?
People will have different preferences for how someone should use their pronouns.
Some people like "she/hers" pronouns to be used one day and "they/them" pronouns to be used another day.
Some people like their pronouns to be used interchangeably.
Some people may prefer you to use only one set of their pronouns.
Sentence Example:
I really like Bella's makeup; they look very pretty.
Why would someone use she/they pronouns?
There are many different reasons someone would choose these pronouns. Remember: pronouns don't always equal gender.
⦿ Some people use “she/they” because they identify with “female-ness”, femininity, or womanhood
⦿ Some people use “she/they” to express that they are genderfluid or genderflux, and that they change between genders
⦿ Some people use “she/they” because they grew up hearing themselves as a “she,” and they aren’t yet comfortable with switching to only “they”
⦿ Some people use “she/they” because it’s easier in their daily life than just using “they”
⦿ Some some people use “she/they” because they’re testing out “they” pronouns
⦿ Some people use “she/they” because they’re testing out “she” pronouns
⦿ Some people use “she/they” because they are OK with either “she” or “they” , regardless of their gender identity or inner gender
⦿ Some people use “she/they” because that’s just what they prefer!
Remember!
If you have a question about someone's pronouns, always ask! Please don't assume gender off of looks, name, pronouns, etc.
